What Are Peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins. A peptide contains between 2 and 50 amino acids; anything longer is classified as a protein. Collagen itself is a protein made of extremely long amino acid chains. The peptides relevant to skincare are much shorter fragments that can communicate with skin cells rather than simply sitting on the surface.1
The skin produces its own peptides constantly — they are part of the signalling language that regulates cell behaviour, directs collagen synthesis, and coordinates wound healing. When collagen breaks down with age (or UV damage), the breakdown fragments are themselves peptides that signal fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Topical peptides work by mimicking or amplifying these natural signalling processes.
In Korean skincare, peptides have been a serious formulation focus since the early 2000s — predating the Western peptide trend by nearly a decade. Korean formulators typically use peptides in combination with complementary actives (ceramides, HA, fermented ingredients) rather than in isolation, which produces better sustained outcomes than single-peptide serums.
Peptides: Three Types — Very Different Functions
The marketing term “peptides” covers three functionally distinct categories that work through completely different mechanisms. Understanding which type you are using determines what you should expect from it.
Signal Peptides — Tell Skin to Make Collagen
Signal peptides mimic the fragments produced when collagen breaks down. These fragments act as distress signals to fibroblast cells — they are the biological message that says “collagen has been damaged, produce more.” Topical signal peptides send the same message without requiring actual collagen damage, stimulating collagen and elastin production proactively.
The most studied signal peptides:
- Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl) — the most commercially widespread signal peptide. Multiple independent clinical studies show measurable collagen synthesis stimulation and fine line reduction at 3 ppm concentration over twelve weeks.
- Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (Matrixyl 3000) — a combination of two signal peptides targeting different collagen types. The combination is more effective than either alone in published studies.
- Tripeptide-1 (GHK) — also a copper carrier peptide in its GHK-Cu form. As a signal peptide, it stimulates collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan production.
Carrier Peptides — Deliver Trace Minerals to Skin
Carrier peptides do not signal cells — instead they stabilise and deliver trace elements that skin cells need for enzymatic processes. The most important carrier peptide in skincare is:
GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide) — a tripeptide that carries copper ions to skin. Copper is essential for the enzyme lysyl oxidase, which cross-links newly synthesised collagen and elastin into stable fibre structures. Without sufficient copper, new collagen is structurally weak. GHK-Cu also has antioxidant and wound-healing properties and is used in post-procedure skincare for accelerated recovery.
Copper peptides are among the best-evidenced anti-ageing actives in cosmetic science — the challenge is formulation stability, as GHK-Cu degrades in the presence of vitamin C and direct acids. Korean formulators typically use copper peptides in standalone serums or in ceramide-based moisturisers rather than in combination products with competing actives.
Neurotransmitter-Inhibiting Peptides — The Topical Botox
Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides reduce the communication between nerves and facial muscles, decreasing the intensity of repeated facial muscle contractions that form expression lines. They are sometimes marketed as “topical Botox” — which overstates the effect, but the mechanism is real and the clinical evidence is genuine.
The most studied:
- Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 or -8 (Argireline) — inhibits neuromuscular signalling. Multiple studies show measurable reduction in depth of expression lines at 10% concentration over 28–60 days. Effect is real but significantly less dramatic than injectable botulinum toxin. Requires consistent use to maintain.
- Leuphasyl — often combined with Argireline for synergistic effect. Together the combination outperforms either alone in line-depth studies.
How Korean Skincare Formulates Peptides Better
The key K-beauty advantage with peptides is multi-mechanism formulation. Western peptide serums often feature a single peptide type in isolation. Korean formulations typically combine:
- A signal peptide for collagen stimulation
- Hyaluronic acid for immediate surface hydration
- Niacinamide for barrier support and brightening
- Ceramides for barrier repair
- Fermented actives for overall skin health
This layered approach means the peptide works in a well-hydrated, barrier-supported environment rather than against compromised skin. The clinical outcomes from combination Korean peptide products consistently outperform single-active Western peptide serums in head-to-head user testing.

How to Use Peptides Correctly
Placement: Peptide serums go after toner and HA serum, before moisturiser. Peptides are typically water-soluble and work best close to clean skin before heavier products reduce penetration.
Avoid direct acid contact: Apply peptides and AHAs/BHAs at different times of day — acids can degrade certain peptide bonds. Niacinamide, HA, ceramides, and centella all pair safely with peptides.
With retinol: Peptides and retinol are complementary — retinol accelerates cell turnover while signal peptides stimulate new collagen production. Use both but at different steps (peptide serum after toner, retinol as the final active before moisturiser).
Consistency is essential: All three peptide types require sustained use for results. Signal peptide effects are typically visible at eight to twelve weeks; neurotransmitter peptide effects at four to eight weeks. Stopping use reverses the effect over a similar timeframe.

Reading Peptides on Ingredient Labels
- Palmitoyl prefix — indicates a lipid-conjugated signal peptide. The palmitoyl chain improves skin penetration significantly. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 are the most studied.
- Acetyl prefix — indicates a neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptide. Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (Argireline) is the most common.
- GHK-Cu — the copper carrier peptide. Always listed as GHK-Cu or Copper Tripeptide-1.
- Position in INCI list: At effective concentrations, peptides appear in the first ten ingredients. Peptides listed at positions 15–20 are at concentrations too low for clinical benefit — they are listed for marketing purposes.
- Tripeptide, Hexapeptide, Pentapeptide — the number indicates how many amino acids are in the peptide chain. Does not indicate which type (signal, carrier, or neurotransmitter) — you need the full INCI name for that.
